The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that every year, 2.3 million people are injured in auto accidents. In some of these cases, the injuries sustained are grounds for personal injury lawsuits. Though many types of injury are possible in car accidents, some of the most common are:
Traumatic brain injuries. A brain injury can be caused by a blow to the head or by an object piercing the skull. Depending on the area of the brain that is injured, traumatic brain injury can cause a number of symptoms, such as dizziness, headache, blurred vision, seizures, loss of motor control, and confusion. Brain injuries often require surgery and many sufferers of traumatic brain injury experience cognitive or neurological effects for the rest of their lives.
Whiplash. During a car crash, it is common for victims’ necks to snap forward and back with the momentum, leading to a condition known as whiplash. Though it is not permanent, whiplash can be incredibly painful and cause headache, neck pain, and difficulty moving the head.
Spinal cord injuries. These injuries are common in car accidents and may be caused by objects penetrating the spinal cord or by pressure which compresses the spinal cord. If the spinal cord is severed, sensation and motor control below that point in the body will generally be lost. In the case of a compressed or crushed spinal cord, there may still be some function.
Broken bones. The impact of a collision can cause bone fractures which may take a long time to heal. If broken bones do not heal correctly, they could require surgery to repair.
Psychological damage. After a car accident, many victims experience anxiety, nightmares, and other emotional symptoms. These may be as severe as Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome and may affect a victim’s quality of life for years to come.
